Document Version: 1.0
IMPORTANT NOTICE: READ CAREFULLY BEFORE USING OUR SERVICES
PLATOV provides cryptocurrency exchange services that involve substantial risks.
THIS RISK DISCLOSURE CANNOT AND DOES NOT DESCRIBE ALL POSSIBLE RISKS
This document describes key risks of cryptocurrency transactions, but CANNOT comprehensively disclose all possible risks. New risks emerge regularly and some cannot be anticipated.
YOU SHOULD ONLY USE DIGITAL ASSETS YOU ARE PREPARED TO LOSE ENTIRELY
By using PLATOV services, you acknowledge that:
- You may lose some or all of your invested capital
- This disclosure is not exhaustive
- You proceed at your own risk
- Cryptocurrency trading is not suitable for everyone
1. General Risk Warning
Cryptocurrency trading carries high risk and may not be suitable for all users. Key warnings:
High Volatility: Prices can fluctuate dramatically within minutes — 50%+ daily movements are possible.
No Guarantees: Past performance does not indicate future results. No investment is guaranteed to maintain value.
Irreversible Transactions: Once completed, cryptocurrency transactions generally cannot be cancelled or reversed.
Complex Technology: Technical failures or user errors may result in permanent loss of funds.
Regulatory Uncertainty: Legal status varies by jurisdiction and changes frequently.
IMPORTANT: Before using our services:
- Understand how cryptocurrencies work
- Assess your risk tolerance and financial situation
- Only invest amounts you can afford to lose completely
- Consider seeking independent financial, legal, or tax advice
- Never invest your entire capital in cryptocurrencies
2. Market Risks
a. Price Volatility
Cryptocurrency markets are extremely volatile due to:
Market Sentiment: News, social media trends, and rumors cause rapid price swings.
Market Manipulation: Limited liquidity makes markets susceptible to pump-and-dump schemes and coordinated trading.
Whale Activity: Large holders can significantly impact prices through substantial orders.
24/7 Trading: Markets operate continuously without circuit breakers, allowing extreme movements at any time.
Flash Crashes: Sudden severe price drops due to automated trading or cascading liquidations.
Risk Impact: You may experience 50-90% losses within hours. Price movements can wipe out positions before you can react.
b. Liquidity Risks
Fragmented Markets: Liquidity distributed across numerous exchanges reduces market depth.
Order Execution Delays: During volatility or network congestion, you may be unable to execute trades.
Slippage: Large orders filled at progressively worse prices due to insufficient depth.
Risk Impact: You may be unable to sell holdings when needed, or accept significantly worse prices than expected.
c. Market Manipulation
Pump and Dump: Coordinated artificial price inflation followed by mass selling.
Wash Trading: Trading with oneself to create false volume.
Social Media Manipulation: Coordinated campaigns spreading false information.
Risk Impact: You may make decisions based on manipulated prices, resulting in financial losses.
3. Technology and Security Risks
a. Cybersecurity Threats
Hacking and Theft: Exchanges and wallets are targets for sophisticated attacks.
Phishing: Fraudulent communications designed to steal credentials or private keys.
Malware: Software designed to steal cryptocurrency or compromise devices.
SIM Swapping: Attackers hijacking phone numbers to bypass 2FA.
PLATOV Security Measures: While we implement encryption, 2FA, cold storage, and regular audits, no system is completely immune to attacks.
User Responsibilities:
- Use strong, unique passwords and enable 2FA
- Never share passwords, private keys, or recovery phrases
- Be cautious of phishing via email, SMS, or social media
- Use reputable antivirus and avoid public Wi-Fi for transactions
Risk Impact: Security breaches could result in theft of cryptocurrency holdings. No guarantee all losses can be recovered.
b. Technical Failures
Platform Downtime: Server failures or traffic overload may prevent access.
Network Congestion: Blockchain congestion delays transactions for extended periods.
Smart Contract Bugs: Vulnerabilities may be exploited, resulting in loss of funds.
Blockchain Forks: Hard forks may affect values and processing.
Transaction Errors: User errors (wrong address, incorrect network) generally cannot be reversed.
Risk Impact: Technical failures may prevent access to funds or executing time-sensitive trades.
c. Internet and Connectivity Dependencies
Cryptocurrency transactions depend entirely on internet connectivity:
Infrastructure Risks: ISP outages, routing issues, DNS attacks, geographic restrictions (particularly relevant in Africa).
PLATOV's Limitations: We maintain secure ledgers and contingency plans, but do NOT control:
- Signal power or reception
- Internet routing
- Your equipment configuration
- Your connection reliability
Risk Impact: Connection failures may result in transactions not executing according to instructions or not executing at all.
d. Wallet and Private Key Risks
Loss of Access: Lost private keys or recovery phrases = permanently inaccessible cryptocurrency. PLATOV CANNOT recover lost keys.
Incorrect Transactions: Sending to wrong address = permanent loss. No "forgot password" for blockchain.
Risk Impact: Complete and permanent loss of holdings with no recovery possibility.
4. Regulatory and Legal Risks
a. Regulatory Uncertainty
Laws governing cryptocurrencies change rapidly without advance notice.
Current Status by Key Jurisdictions:
- Nigeria: SEC regulation under ISA 2025, CBN allowing licensed VASP operations
- Kenya: VASP Bill 2025 establishing framework, 3% transaction tax
- South Africa: FSCA licensing and regulation of CASPs
- European Union: Regulated under MiCA effective 2024-2025
Risk Impact: Regulatory changes may restrict services, require additional verification, impose tax obligations, or make holdings illegal in your jurisdiction.
b. Sanctions and Compliance
AML/CFT Compliance: Accounts may be frozen or transactions blocked if linked to sanctioned entities.
Cross-Border Restrictions: International transactions subject to capital controls or legal restrictions.
Risk Impact: Account freezes, fund seizures, or criminal prosecution for violations. PLATOV must comply with lawful orders from regulators.
c. Prohibition and Confiscation
High-Risk Jurisdictions: Algeria (banned 2024), China (trading prohibited), Egypt (restricted).
Forced Liquidation: Authorities may order account freezes or liquidations.
Risk Impact: Cryptocurrency may become worthless if banned, or subject to confiscation.
5. Cryptocurrency-Specific Risks
a. Blockchain and Network Risks
51% Attacks: Single entity controlling majority of computing power could manipulate transactions.
Network Forks: Disagreements create competing versions of cryptocurrency.
Smart Contract Vulnerabilities: Bugs cannot be easily corrected and may result in loss.
Risk Impact: Blockchain issues may affect processing, result in fund loss, or cause permanent splits affecting value.
b. Stablecoin-Specific Risks
Despite their name, stablecoins carry significant risks:
De-pegging Events: May lose peg to fiat during market stress (historical example: TerraUSD catastrophic failure).
Reserve Risks: Uncertainty about actual backing and quality of reserve assets.
Regulatory Risks: Increasing scrutiny may force delisting or service termination.
Issuer Risks: Dependence on solvency of issuing organizations (Tether Limited, Circle).
Risk Impact: Stablecoins losing peg or issuers becoming insolvent could result in substantial losses. PLATOV does NOT guarantee stability or redeemability.
c. Blockchain Fork Risks
When blockchain software is modified, forks can occur creating parallel versions:
Hard Forks:
- Permanent Chain Splits: Create separate blockchains (Bitcoin/Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum/Ethereum Classic)
- Asset Duplication: You may receive "forked" coins on new blockchain
- Value Uncertainty: Relative value unpredictable
- Replay Attacks: Transactions on one chain may be replayed on another
PLATOV's Fork Handling:
- Transaction Suspension: May temporarily suspend deposits/withdrawals until situation stabilizes
- PLATOV does NOT guarantee distribution of forked assets. We make reasonable efforts to support major forks if technically feasible
- Distribution decisions communicated via website/email. We reserve right to ignore minor or contentious forks
- Do NOT deposit during fork periods expecting forked assets
No Claims for Forked Assets:
- PLATOV not obligated to track, store, or distribute forked cryptocurrencies
- Claims must be submitted within 6 months of fork event
- All distribution fees borne by user
- Claims after 6 months disregarded
Risk Impact: Forks can result in temporary inability to access cryptocurrencies, price volatility, potential loss of forked assets if PLATOV doesn't support new chain.
6. Transaction Risks
a. Irreversibility
Blockchain transactions are final and irreversible:
No Chargebacks: Unlike credit cards, cryptocurrency transactions cannot be reversed once confirmed.
User Error: Wrong address, wrong network, incorrect amount = permanent loss.
No Recovery Mechanism: No central authority can reverse incorrect transactions.
PLATOV's Limitation on Accidental Transaction Recovery:
PLATOV processes ONLY Digital Assets transferred as part of transactions made through our platform to indicated addresses.
- PLATOV bears NO responsibility for accidental transactions, including transfers to incorrect or inactive addresses
- However, upon request, PLATOV will make every possible effort to track accidental transactions within 6 months from transaction date and attempt return if technically possible
- Claims after 6 months will be disregarded
- All recovery fees paid by user
- NO guarantee recovery will succeed
Common User Errors:
- Sending to address on wrong network (ERC-20 USDT to TRC-20 address)
- Copying incomplete or incorrect address
- Sending unsupported tokens
Risk Impact: Transaction errors typically result in complete permanent loss with no recovery possibility.
b. Network Delays
Network Congestion: Transactions may take hours or days during high activity.
Fee Competition: Transactions with insufficient fees may delay indefinitely.
Multiple Confirmations: PLATOV requires 2-12 confirmations depending on cryptocurrency.
Risk Impact: Delays may prevent time-sensitive trades or accessing funds when needed.
c. Fee Fluctuations
Variable Network Fees: Gas fees can increase dramatically during congestion.
High Fee Events: During extreme congestion, fees may exceed value of small transactions.
Risk Impact: Unexpectedly high fees may make transactions economically unviable.
7. Exchange-Specific Operational Risks
a. Exchange Rate Volatility During Processing
Timing Risk:
- Exchange rate calculated when payment is accepted, not when initiated
- Due to confirmation requirements (typically 6 blocks), rates may change significantly
Six-Block Confirmation Standard: Payment considered "accepted" after 6 confirmations — can take 10 minutes to several hours.
Fixed vs. Floating Rate:
- Fixed Rate: Locked at transaction creation, expires if not completed within timeframe (10-30 minutes)
- Floating Rate: Determined at confirmation moment, exposing you to market volatility
Risk Impact: During volatility, applied exchange rate may differ significantly from displayed rate. You may receive less than expected.
b. Minimum and Maximum Transaction Limits
Minimum Amounts: Transactions below thresholds may not process. Small transactions may be unviable due to network fees.
Maximum Amounts: Large transactions may require additional verification or KYC. Limits may change based on market conditions.
Risk Impact: Transactions outside limits may be rejected, delayed, or require additional procedures.
8. Financial Risks
a. Loss of Capital
WARNING: You may lose some or all of your invested capital.
Factors causing loss:
- Adverse price movements
- Market crashes or prolonged bear markets
- Theft or loss due to security breaches
- Technical errors or user mistakes
- Exchange insolvency or platform failure
- Regulatory actions
Important Considerations:
- Never invest more than you can afford to lose
- Cryptocurrency should be only a portion of diversified portfolio
- Do not rely on crypto investments for essential expenses
- Past performance does NOT guarantee future results
Risk Impact: Cryptocurrency investments are speculative and high-risk. Total loss of capital is possible.
b. No Investor Protection
Unlike traditional financial products, cryptocurrencies lack standard protections:
No Deposit Insurance: Not insured by government schemes (FDIC, FSCS).
No Compensation Schemes: Not eligible for financial compensation schemes.
Limited Recourse: Options for recovering losses are limited.
Caveat Emptor: "Buyer beware" principle applies.
Risk Impact: If you suffer losses, there is no government agency or compensation scheme to reimburse you. Losses are typically final and unrecoverable.
9. Fraud and Scam Risks
a. Common Cryptocurrency Scams
Ponzi Schemes: Promises of guaranteed returns or "risk-free" investments.
Phishing: Fake websites impersonating legitimate exchanges.
Social Engineering: Romance scams, employment scams, "pig butchering" schemes.
Fake ICOs: Fraudulent token sales, pump-and-dump schemes, rug pulls.
Giveaway Scams: Fake giveaways requiring initial "validation" payment.
Protection Measures:
- Only use official PLATOV channels
- Never share password, private keys, or recovery phrases
- Be skeptical of guaranteed returns
- Verify authenticity of all communications
- Never send cryptocurrency to someone promising to send back more
Risk Impact: Cryptocurrency scams result in billions in losses annually. Once sent to scammers, recovery is impossible.
